Chester City (2004) Limited are due in Court 76 of the High Courts of Justice today, to face a winding-up petition brought by HM Revenue and Customs, who are claiming £26,125 in unpaid taxes.
All the indications are that City in its current form will be wound up, they don’t have any recognisable income streams after being booted out of the Football Conference just under a fortnight ago, and besides their tax problems, a number of other invoices and staff salaries remain unpaid.
It is understood that the current club’s owners the Vaughan family, made enquiries about joining next season’s restructured Welsh Premier League.
However in the unlikely event of them surviving today’s events in London and being elected into the Welsh fold, where City would play their fixtures, is a major stumbling block – as sources at Chester Council, who own the Deva Stadium, have indicated that legal proceedings may well be instituted speedily to evict the current tenants.
Three other football clubs are also appearing in the courts in London today, with Southend United, Cardiff City, and Margate all shown on the official court listing.
